ทุนรัฐบาลหรือหน่วยงานภายนอกของประเทศปลายทาง

ทุนจากรัฐบาลหรือหน่วยงานภายนอกของประเทศปลายทาง เช่น ทุน Chevening, ทุน Fullbright และทุนอื่นๆ ลักษณะของทุนประเภทนี้จะมีเงื่อนไขในการรับทุนแตกต่างกัน เช่น บางทุนมีข้อกำหนดเกี่ยวกับประสบการณ์ทำงาน บางทุนมีข้อกำหนดเกี่ยวกับการทำงานหลังเรียนจบ เป็นต้น

ทุนสำหรับนักเรียนที่มีคุณสมบัติดีเด่น หรือ Merit-based Scholarships, Academic Excellence Scholrships

ทุนนี้ให้กับนักเรียนที่มีคุณสมบัติดีเด่น โดยอาจเป็นเรื่องผลการเรียนในระดับปริญญาตรี หรืออาจให้เขียน essay ประกอบการสมัคร

ทุนสำหรับนักเรียนขาดแคลน หรือ Need-based Scholarships

ทุนประเภทนี้จะพิจารณาจากรายได้ของผู้ปกครองและความสามารถในการจ่ายค่าเรียน ทุนประเภทนี้ส่วนมากจะให้กับนักเรียนในประเทศที่มหาวิทยาลัยตั้งอยู่ แต่ในบางครั้งมหาวิทยาลัยจะพิจารณาคุณสมบัติด้านอื่นๆ ของนักเรียนร่วมด้วยและเปิดให้นักเรียนชาติอื่นๆ สมัครได้

ทุนนักกีฬา หรือ Athletic Scholarships

จะมีให้กับนักกีฬาที่มีผลการแข่งขันดีเยี่ยม โดยเมื่อเข้ามาเรียนแล้วจะมาเล่นกีฬานั้นในนามมหาวิทยาลัย มักเป็นทุนเต็มจำนวน

ทุนที่เน้นเฉพาะสาขาหรือเฉพาะด้าน หรือ Program or Field Specific Scholarships

ทุนนี้จะมีในทุกมหาวิทยาลัย เช่น ทุนของสาขา STEM, ทุนของ Business School เป็นต้น

ทุนที่เจาะจงเชื้อชาติ หรือ Country Specific Scholarships

ทุนที่เจาะจงเชื้อชาติ เช่น ทุนสำหรับนักเรียนจากประเทศใดประเทศหนึ่ง หรือเป็นประชากรของภูมิภาคเฉพาะเจาะจง เช่น ทุนสำหรับนักเรียนจากประเทศไทย ทุนสำหรับนักเรียนกลุ่ม EU เป็นต้น
