St. Nicholas Day, 5th – 6th December
Saint Nicholas Day, or the Feast of Saint Nicholas, is celebrated on the 5th and 6th of December in Western Christian countries and on the 19th of December in Eastern Christian countries on the Old Calendar.
History of St. Nicholas the inspiration for the modern day Santa Claus
St. Nicholas was Born in 280 A.D during the time of the Roman Empire and was the early 4th century Christian Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor, which is now called Turkey. He had a reputation for being a very kind and generous man and for helping the poor. St. Nicholas is known for selling all his possessions and giving anonymous gifts to help those in need. Raised as a devout Christian, he was eventually made a bishop and St. Nicholas dedicated his whole life to serving the sick and suffering. It is said that he gifted the needy by secretly putting gifts of gold in their socks and shoes. This slowly became a part of tradition and custom in many parts of the world and overtime St. Nicholas became an inspiration for the modern day Santa Claus. In some legends St. Nicholas is accompanied by a terrifying half goat half demon called Krampus who leaves lumps of coal instead of treats and gifts for misbehaving children and also punishes them in contrast to St. Nicholas.
Common Traditions and Customs
Leaving your Shoes or Boots Out on December 5th to Celebrate St Nicholas Day
On this day people around the world who celebrate St. Nicholas Day have a tradition of leaving out a shoe or boot in the chimney and hallway on the evening of December 5th for St. Nicholas’ arrival on December 6th. But nowadays people put coins, healthy treats and oranges in the socks and shoes. These items represent the gold St. Nick gave away.
Random Acts of Kindness
St. Nicholas Day is also celebrated by doing random acts of kindness to bring joy to others around this time of year to help us all remember the good deeds, kindness and generosity of St. Nicholas and to pass along the good holiday spirit to others.

ชาวคริสเตียนในประเทศตะวันตกจะเฉลิมฉลอง St. Nicholas Day ในวันที่ 5 – 6 ธันวาคมของทุกปี และ ชาวคริสเตียนในประเทศตะวันออกจะฉลองในวันที่ 19 ธันวาคมของทุกปี
ประวัติความเป็นมาของนักบุญนิโคลัส หรือในปัจจุบันเรียกกันว่า “ซานตาคลอส”
นักบุญนิโคลัสเกิดในปีค.ศ. 280 เป็นช่วงจักรวรรดิโรมัน และดำรงตำแหน่งบิชอปแห่งไมร่าในคาบสมุทรในเอเชียตะวันตก (ปัจจุบันคือประเทศตุรกี) ในช่วงคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 4 นักบุญนิโคลัสมีชื่อเสียงว่าเป็นคนใจดีและใจกว้าง คอยช่วยเหลือเหล่าคนยากจน ตำนานกล่าวว่านักบุญนิโคลัสขายทรัพย์สมบัติของตนเองและให้ของขวัญแก่ผู้ที่ต้องการมันโดยไม่เปิดเผยตัวตน นักบุญนิโคลัสได้รับการยกย่องและศรัทธาเป็นอย่างมาก และในที่สุดเขาก็ได้รับการแต่งตั้งให้เป็นบิชอป นักบุญนิโคลัสอุทิศทั้งชีวิตของตนเพื่อช่วยเหลือผู้ที่เจ็บป่วยและผู้ที่เผชิญกับความยากลำบาก นักบุญนิโคลัสจะให้ของที่จำเป็นแก่คนที่ต้องการมันโดยไม่เปิดเผยตัวตน เช่น ให้ทองโดยการแอบใส่ไว้ในรองเท้าหรือถุงเท้าของคนเหล่านั้น ต่อมาการกระทำนี้ได้ค่อยๆ กลายมาเป็นวัฒนธรรมของคนทั่วโลก นักบุญนิโคลัสจึงกลายเป็นต้นกำเนิดของซานตาคลอสที่เรารู้จักในปัจจุบันนั่นเอง ในบางตำนานกล่าวว่านอกจากนักบุญนิโคลัสแล้ว ยังมีครึ่งแพะครึ่งปีศาจที่มีชื่อว่า ครัมปัส (Krampus) ที่เป็นฝันร้ายในวันคริสต์มาสสำหรับเด็กๆ อีกด้วย ครัมปัสจะให้ก้อนถ่านแทนขนมและลงโทษเด็กที่มีความประพฤติไม่ดี ซึ่งตรงกันข้ามกับนักบุญนิโคลัสโดยสิ้นเชิง
วัฒนธรรมที่ปฏิบัติต่อๆ กันมา
การวางรองเท้า ถุงเท้าไว้ที่ปล่องไฟในวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม เพื่อฉลอง St. Nicholas Day
ในวันนี้ผู้คนทั่วโลก จะวางรองเท้าไว้ที่ปล่องไฟและทางเดินในเย็นวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม เพื่อรอการมาถึงของนักบุญนิโคลัสในวันที่ 6 ธันวาคม ในปัจจุบันคนจะใส่เงินเหรียญ ขนมและส้มในถุงเท้าหรือรองเท้า ของเหล่านี้เปรียบเสมือนทองที่นักบุญนิโคลัสให้แก่เหล่าผู้ตกทุกข์ได้ยากในอดีต
การทำความดี
การทำความดีหรือมีน้ำใจกับคนรอบตัว เพื่อนำความสุขมาให้แก่พวกเขาในช่วงนี้ของปี เป็นหนึ่งในการเฉลิมฉลอง St. Nicholas Day และยังทำให้ผู้คนยังระลึกถึงความดี ความมีน้ำใจของนักบุญนิโคลัสและส่งต่อความรู้สึกดีๆ นี้ให้กับผู้อื่นอีกด้วย
